Acrylic and Polycarbonate

The two most common plastics are acrylic commonly referred to as Plexiglass and Polycarbonate known as Lexan. They each have their own strengths and weaknesses. Acrylic and Polycarbonate are more expensive than annealed glass but they are also more durable and versatile.

Acrylic (Plexiglass) is less expensive than Polycarbonate, but it can crack easier. It is used for a variety of purposes from replacing glass in a storm door or window to being used as a barrier in a sand blaster. We also find that Plexiglass is commonly used for outdoor signs as it is more resistant to the elements and vinyl films adhere very well. Acrylics are harder to break and lighter than glass which makes them great for large picture frames and to replace cabinet door glass as well.Acrylic is available in many colors but we sell clear, black, gray, and bronze the most. White translucent, mirrored, non-glare, and obscure patterns are available although they are rarely purchased mainly because the cost is higher for specialty Plexiglass.

Polycarbonate (Lexan) is 200 times stronger than Plexiglass and more pliable, but does scratch easier. In our line of work we see Lexan used quite often for windshields in ATV’s, to replace windows for security in buildings, and as barriers against damage from flying objects. Lexan is practically unbreakable, resistant to most chemicals, and can be drilled without cracking making it great for warehouse environments and even race car windows. Clear Polycarbonate is used most frequently, but we can obtain other colors as well.
