Replacing Window Panes

Home-owners generally replace the glass in their windows for one of two reasons

Reason #1: The glass is broken.

If your glass is broken we can provide a quick estimate and replacement so you can secure your home and belongings. If the broken glass is single glazed we can usually take care of the replacement the same day. Windows manufactured prior to 1980 usually have single-pane glass. Most modern windows are insulated (dual pane) glass. And most insulated windows manufactured in the past ten years have a higher energy efficient glass coating called a Low-emissivity or Low-E coating. Some glasses even have inert Argon gas between the panes to make it even more energy efficient. For every window type North Alabama Glass can provide the replacement glass you need.

Reason #2: Your insulated window glass has fogged up.

Insulated Glass, also known as dual-pane, double-glazing or thermopane glass, consists of two pieces (known as lites) of glass separated by a desiccated spacer and hermetically sealed together using polysulfide or silicone sealant. Newer insulated glass, especially glasses with Low-E coatings, are very energy efficient. Most insulated glass will retain its seal for about 12 to 20 years. But, once the seal breaks down, the glass will fog up and eventually turn an ugly milky white color and will lose most of its energy efficiency.

While insulated glass is more expensive than old fashioned single window pane glass, the payback in utility bill savings is between 5 and 9 years. Payback will vary depending upon a variety of factors (including the location and orientation of the house, the type of glass and cost of local electricity and gas).
